Talkfest: A confession

July 17th, 2010, 4 Comments

I have an ugly confession to make. Like Shane at Gallomanor‘s blog, I left last Thursday’s UK Science Blogging Talkfest slightly disappointed. I feel bad admitting to this because the people were lovely, I am grateful to the organisers and there were spangly cakes. Having blogged for a week now, I rocked up at the Talkfest [...]

The dune that roared

July 17th, 2010, No Comments

At Thursday’s Science Blogging Talkfest, I got chatting about booming sand dunes – sand that makes sounds like a didgeridoo. I said I’d dig out a video of scientists sliding down booming dunes on their butts. Well, I keep my promises. You can find more information about research into the dunes on this website run by Professor [...]

Car-eating holes explained

July 14th, 2010, 1 Comment

Look at this image carefully and you can see a car about halfway down the hole. According to newspaper reports, it’s a Toyota Camry. Sadly, there isn’t a record of what the owner said when they returned to their Toyota. I assume it was something like “Oh, s**t!” The hole is in Tampa, Florida near [...]

About Outdoor Science

I’ve just spent all evening writing the ‘About’ page for this blog. It stopped me blogging about anything else, but I’m reasonably happy with it now.

Gene for-tigue

They hope the discovery will help people with cocklaphobia – a fear of hats, by explaining why some people are drawn to donning headgear while others shun the habit. The researchers, from the University of Sans Fez in the US, studied 200 Asian and white men and women. [...]

Puppy pipped to the post

February 9th, 2010, No Comments

Looks like Toqey, my spaniel pup, lost out on the editorial internship he applied for on Sunday. It seems he was narrowly pipped to the post by a dead chinchilla. Within hours of his application being sent, Toqey received this email: If you put more effort into getting a job as you do writing these [...]

Work under these conditions? You must be barking!

February 7th, 2010, 1 Comment

Here is Toq’s job application (see this post for an explanation of why a spaniel puppy applied for a editorial internship). Toq’s covering letter Dear Mr Mulki, I’m writing to apply for the role of editorial assistant at Bridging and Commercial. I attach a photograph. I have five months’ experience as general dogsbody at Iconoclast [...]

Why a dog applied for a job

February 7th, 2010, 5 Comments

Our spaniel puppy applied for an editorial assistant ’job’ today. No, he can’t spell, but neither can the person wanting a ‘good investigative writer’ to work ‘on an expenses paid only bases [sic] for at least two months’.
